Day 4 – Seaside, OR to Tillamook, OR (climate/climb it)

51 miles

Alex: A completely sunny day at last.  We finally had to break out the sunscreen (one of the few things we didn’t ship back).  Today had several large climbs including one of the largest that we’d see in Oregon.  We haven’t had to walk up any hills for the last couple of days for which we are happy about.  Today was a beautiful ride with sections along ocean cliffs, Haystack rock, and a nice section along a country road.  We ended the day with a self-guided tour of the Tillamook cheese factory and a bowl of ice cream.

Steve: The climbs were relentless, but the reward was at the top.  We could see down the coastline for several miles, getting a preview of where we would be riding. The Oregon coast looks a lot like California minus all the people.  My kind of place! Today was a good confidence builder..the hills were long, but not very steep so we held our own.

We stopped along a beach where a sign showed pictures and descriptions of the sea birds that lived there.  Alex looked over to a pole sticking about 15 feet out of the water,
Alex – “Hey, I think that’s one of those black birds.”
Steve – “Yeah, a Cormorant, those things dive…they’re flightless.”
(Bird takes off and starts to fly away)
Steve – “Drop!  Drop!  Drop, Damn you.  This is what happens when you get all your scientific information from the movie Master and Commander.”
