~300 miles
Alex: Well we did it. We dumped the bikes off at a bike shop to be shipped back to us and picked up a Hertz one way rental to San Francisco. It was after noon before we got on our way. Our plan was to drive down via the same route that we would have been biking had we continued on bikes.
Our biking maps had laid out a “lost coast” alternate route that looked interesting so we decided to drive that to see what that was like. Let me just say that it was a good thing we didn’t go that way on our bikes. It would have been the end of our equipment, and our bikes wouldn’t have survived either. Monster hills and a bad curvy road conditions would have done us in. Realizing that this 50 mile detour was going to take us 3 hours to drive, we turned around and headed back to 101. We had a lot of miles to cover and a lot to see in a day.
We drove through the Avenue of the Giants. Impressively huge trees everywhere. After a while it was like “how many huge trees can you look at?” They seemed to go on and on. We got back on 101 and headed for hwy 1 along the coast.
The drive along Hwy 1 was spectacular. Similar to many of our coastal rides from the last week. Lots of ups and downs, lots of twists and turns, lots of surf and cliffs. We were noting as we were driving how difficult and long a ride this would have been on the bike. We stopped in Mendocino for coffee and pastries (no longer in training).
As the sun was setting, we pulled over and walked to the edge of the cliff to watch the sun set. As the sun was going down, Steve spotted some whales spouting water as they came up for air. It was the perfect ending to a great day. We couldn’t have scripted it better.
We had about another hour or 2 before San Francisco. Driving hwy 1 in the dark wasn’t as fun. We enjoyed a late dinner in Sausolito grabbed a hotel in Mill Valley. Tomorrow morning we’ll drop off the rental car and head out on foot.
